What’s in an app? Well, if you’re in the UAM (urban air mobility) game and your name is Volocopter, then the VoloIQ app – the customer-facing part of the company’s digital backbone of the same name – is the solution set to facilitate point-to-point intra-urban flights starting in 2024. The UAM company’s mobile-first approach is set to offer future passengers a quick and intuitive ticketing platform, enabling them to book a flight aboard a VoloCity air taxi in a few easy taps. Sounds simple enough. Let’s take a look at how it’s coming together, what its winning features will be, and how it’ll actually work.
The Volocopter app: App, app, & away?
As part of the company’s mobile-first strategy, the new Volocopter app is planned to be rolled out for our commercial launch in 2024. With the Volocopter app being the booking tool of choice, the plan is to afford time-crunched future VoloCity air taxi passengers all the conveniences of a future-forward flight-hailing service – in one quick and easy handheld tool.
Let’s take a closer look. The Volocopter app will cover the entire customer journey. In short: the app will enable future passengers to book trips on the go, as is customary with many transit companies these days. The rest of the VoloIQ app features come as standard: bite-size company info, an in-app payment option, and a digital boarding pass all feature prominently. What’s more, passengers will be able to avail of the QR code-style boarding pass to access an air taxi flight via their chosen vertiport (UAM departure gate).
And the innovation doesn’t end there: perhaps the coolest thing of all is the Advanced Air Mobility FacePod, a technology developed in collaboration with SITA. The AAM FacePod is set to enable boarding via – you guessed it – facial recognition, much like the passport control gates used at conventional airport immigration points, which rely on biometric scanning. Oh, and it’ll validate your boarding pass, too, to deliver the full all-in-one experience – a tech that even U.S.-based TSA (Transport Security Administration) is trialing starting summer 2023.
There are only minor differences to the airport access gates we know and (many of us) love: one is face recognition. The VoloIQ app will offer users to upload a selfie during online check-in, instead of using their passport snap for identification.
The VoloIQ app is coming together
The team is currently working on both, an iOS-based app, and an Android version. For Volocopter's team of developers, iterations are still the order of the day. Their efforts are supported by the results of two extensive customer surveys, which helped them to gather valuable feedback on aspects like the design, booking process, and other user interface features. The key elements are all being integrated as we read, including the payment function and a customer management system that will ensure smooth back-end operations for the app. The next task will be to tweak the final design and ensure all the functions work as they should.
What’s more, the promising collaboration that was established with SITA – our preferred partner for vertiport digital and IT systems – is expected to translate into better integration of the company’s digital-first approach, with SITA providing both the hardware and software to bring various VoloIQ processes to life.
Volocopter app demos aplenty
Meanwhile, our VoloIQ team has been on something of a roadshow with our boarding gate system, to give people an idea of what it’ll actually be like to board one of our VoloCity air taxis. Showcases in Paris and Rome have resonated well with those who have seen firsthand how passengers will embark on their short flights across the city.
Prominent local German politicians and members of the press also got a glimpse of how the final product will look during the latest demo, given at . A quick and easy-to-digest explanation was followed by a brief check-in demo at the boarding gate (a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, indicative of the technology’s ease of use). In short, our guests were very impressed seeing and experiencing the boarding process unfold before their eyes.
Our VoloIQ app video below explains how the process works in a mere 30 seconds:
